# Entity SEO

Entity SEO makes the things your business is about, starting with the business itself, clearly identifiable to search engines and AI systems. When they can tell exactly who you are and what you offer, they can rank, describe and recommend you with confidence.

## What an entity is

An entity is a thing that can be uniquely identified: a person, an organization, a place, a product or a concept. "Apple" is a word. Apple Inc. and the fruit are two different entities, and search engines work hard to tell them apart.

Google began organizing information this way with the Knowledge Graph in 2012, and its Hummingbird update the following year shifted search toward understanding the meaning of whole queries rather than matching keywords. I started writing about entity search in 2014, when most SEO advice was still built around keyword density. That shift has only accelerated since.

## Why it matters more with AI search

AI platforms answer questions by combining what they retrieve with what they already know about the entities involved. If your business is described inconsistently across your site and the web, or easily confused with a similarly named company, AI tools may leave you out, mix you up with someone else, or describe you inaccurately.

Entity work reduces that ambiguity. It gives search engines and AI systems a consistent, verifiable picture of your organization, the people behind it and what you offer.

## How to do entity SEO

### 1\. Define your core entities

List the entities that matter most: your organization, its founders or key experts, your main services or products, and your locations. Decide on one canonical name for each and use it everywhere.

### 2\. Give each one a clear home on your site

Your About page should explain the organization and its people plainly. Each service or product deserves its own page that states what it is, who it is for and how it differs from alternatives.

### 3\. Describe them with structured data

Use Organization, Person, Service and Product markup where it accurately reflects the page. Give each entity a stable identifier and connect them, so the organization's founder links to the person and each service links to its provider. Use sameAs to point to your official profiles elsewhere.

### 4\. Make sure other sources agree

Search engines trust what independent sources confirm. Keep your details consistent on LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, industry directories and anywhere else your organization appears. Mentions in reputable publications reinforce the picture.

### 5\. Write clearly about related entities

Name the specific standards, tools, places and concepts relevant to your work. A page that says your clinic offers "assessments" is vague. One that names the specific assessments, conditions and credentials involved connects you to the right entities.

### 6\. Monitor how you are described

Check whether a knowledge panel appears for your brand, and claim it through Google if one does. Ask the major AI tools what they know about your organization and note what is missing or wrong. Those gaps show where to focus.

## What entity SEO will not do

Structured data and consistent naming do not guarantee a knowledge panel, rich results or mentions in AI answers. They remove the obstacles to recognition. Visibility still depends on useful content and a real reputation.

## Entity SEO questions

### What is the difference between entity SEO and semantic SEO?

Entity SEO makes specific things, such as your organization, people and products, clearly identifiable to search engines and AI systems. Semantic SEO organizes content around topics and the relationships between them. Entity SEO is about who and what you are; semantic SEO is about how your content explains a subject.

### Will entity SEO get me a knowledge panel?

It can help, but no one can guarantee one. Google decides when to show a knowledge panel based on how confident it is about an entity, which depends heavily on what independent sources say.

### Should I create a Wikipedia or Wikidata entry for my company?

Only if your organization genuinely meets their notability standards, and ideally not by writing it yourself. Promotional entries are usually removed and can create more confusion than they solve.
